Our best birthday gifts for those ‘special’ ages
Birthdays; it doesn’t matter if it’s their first or they’ve reached a great milestone - they’re cause for excitement and gifts. Birthdays are all about celebrating someone’s life, and even if they don’t want the reminder that they’re getting older, it’s all part of the fun.
There are certain birthdays that attract more celebration than others, and although we’re not quite sure who decided which ages deserve such a fuss, we do know how difficult it can be to find the right gift, or come up with ideas in the first place! After all, what could your 70 year old cat-loving enthusiast Aunt Clareese possible want for her birthday? Stay tuned to find out and find more birthday present ideas.
First birthday gifts
Buying a first birthday gift sounds easy on paper; does a one year old really understand that it’s their birthday, and is your future relationship with them going to be impacted by the gift you buy them? Probably not, but you can bet that this applies to their parents!
Although there aren’t many things cuter than 1 year olds, they certainly keep parents on their toes who, by now, are probably looking forward to the years where they can relax a bit more. Our suggestions for a first birthday gift? Pick something that’s cute for the baby, and practical for the parents.

19th birthday gift ideas
For those of us lucky enough to live in Quebec, Manitoba or Alberta, the legal drinking age is 18, but most Canadians have to wait until their 19th birthday. Although all Canadians can vote at age 18 (and they should), the thing we most look forward to is being able to stroll into a bar and order a drink. You’d think that with this newfound ability to drink alcohol they wouldn't need a 19th birthday gift - but think again!

19 year olds are notoriously tricky to buy for, so we thought it only fair to provide you with some solid advice and even more great ideas. Keep their gift lighthearted and fun; they’re at the start of their adult life, not the end, so avoid gifting them crockery or items for a home that they don’t have. If in doubt, phone accessories and fun gifts are a great way to go.

30th birthday gifts
There’s a perception that 30 year olds have their life together and know exactly what they’re doing. In most cases, you’re wrong, and they’re winging it just like they did in their early 20’s, only now they’re much better at doing it. So, what do you buy someone for their 30th birthday gift? Well, before you check out our suggestions, we thought that you should know most Canadian babies are born to women 30 and older - so feel free to remind them of that statistic in their card...

Our best 40th birthday gifts
We’ve heard that life really begins at 40; you’ve had ten years to work out what your 30’s mean, and you’ve built up 40 good years of life skills and knowledge. If not anything else, life just makes more sense at 40. But let’s get this straight, 40 is still young, so don’t start gifting them knitting kits (unless they’re a keen knitter, of course). House-pride, family and hobbies tend to become deeply rooted by a 40th birthday, so if they’re exhibiting signs of a sensible 40 year old, get them a birthday gift along those lines. If they’re not sensible, maybe make your way back up to our 30th gift suggestions!

60th birthday presents
Buying a 60th birthday present requires a simple gift purchasing formula that, until now, has been kept secret by the gift-giving guild. Well, we say nay to secrecy; let the world know the science behind gift giving!
It’s actually really simple. Pick something that’s personal to your relationship with them and demonstrates how special they are to you. You can’t beat that fuzzy feeling of opening a gift that you just know someone has put a lot of thought into.

70th birthday gifts
The moment you’ve all been waiting for. What do you buy your 70 year old cat loving Aunt Clareese? Well, we’d say you couldn’t choose a much better gift than a cat bonnet. Hopefully you see what we’re getting at here; you know the person you’re sending a birthday gift, so use that to your advantage! While a cat bonnet may not seem as appropriate as your generic happy 70th birthday gift, if they understand why you chose them a specific gift, it’s a winner.

Birthday cards
Don’t forget that they’ll be expecting a birthday card too! Design is one thing, but the words your craft within the card are what really make it special. On special birthdays we tend to be around our family, share embarrassing stories of past events and look back on time gone by (unless it’s their first birthday). We recommend that you grab yourself a Tim Hortons coffee, think about a special memory between you both and jot it down in a card.
